Though originally scheduled in the open air of Long Island's Madison Square Garden Bowl, the evening's "all heavyweight boxing card" was held on Aug. 29 at the Garden in New York City, offering 7 6-rounders because the headliner Buddy Baer, brother of the contender Max Baer, was "too young" at 20 to box longer contests in New York. The restriction meant nothing to the Californian, as he knocked out Doyle in the 1st. Other matches featured Galento against McGee, with "Two Ton" Tony taking the victory, the Swede Anderson over Celli after going the distance, and the novice Pack winning his 5th straight by knocking out the veteran Boros in the 3rd again. Winnipeg's Belanger, New York's Mader, and New Jersey's Petrin all won their bouts after filling the frames, and the ring, with action. The ticket was printed for original date at the MSG Bowl in Long Island City, then, unusually, pencil corrected for the actual venue and date. |
