Recovering from his loss of the New York version of the world lightweight crown to his nemesis Montgomery two weeks earlier, the ever agile former shoeshine Beau Jack returned to the ring in the Garden to face the enduring "Bummy" Davis in a headlining 10-round affair. Davis was able to damage Jack in the early going, but the Augusta native lightweight managed the remaining rounds in superior fashion, winning the respect of the crowd and a unanimous decision. Before the main event that Friday night were the usual 4 set of 6-round events, with a short 4-round contest following, with Northeast talent predominant. Brooklyn's Roman Alvarez defeated the powerful puncher from Gary, Indiana, Pete Lello in their 6, and New Haven's Julie Kogon hampered Philly's Phillips plans, taking the decision. Stewart, boxing out of Providence, over the distance decisioned Velez, a Puerto Rican from across in the river in New Jersey, but the Big Apple's "Jabber" Dudley achieved more definitive results, knocking "The Bronx Cyclone" Spataro, billed that night as Patsy Shataro, to the canvas for the count in the final round of their contest. The short bout permitted the veteran Morales to school the novice "Kid Slaughter" from St. Louis in the 1st of 2 paid training sessions quickly scheduled between them. |
