Battling the "Hitman" at Caesars Palace in a brilliant display of stamina and skill later voted the "Fight of the Year" for 1981, Sugar Ray Leonard fought from the 5th round on with a badly swollen eye, yet was able to defeat a staggering Hearns when the fight was stopped on TKO in the 14th of 15. The eye injury later caused Leonard's first retirement from the ring. Among them, the Puerto Rican lightweight "Chapo" Rosario was declared the victor over the Texan "El Tigre" Martinez from Odessa, by unanimous decisionin a 10-round contest, collecting his 16th consectutive pro win. In another, heavyweight "TNT" Tucker won his 8-round bout by a TKO in the 3rd for his 11th straight win since his professional debut. In his 6th appearance in the pro ring, Joe Frazier's son Marvis demolished the veteran Casale, "The Rock" from Newark, New Jersey, so badly by the 4th round that the contest was halted, Frazier was awarded the win, and Casale retired, permanently. Unbeaten yet as a professional, the Texan "El Torito" Ayala earned his 14th win when he knocked out the Mexican middleweight champion from the Yucatan in the 1st round of their bout, bringing Baquedano's career to an end. Despite his kind nickname, the undefeated southpaw "Sweet" Irving Mitchell knocked out Styles in the 3rd for his 7th win in the big ring. |
