Invitational Box - Cuban President Colonel Fulgencio Battista

Competing in his 3rd defense of the world title collected in his defeat of Bratton in May 1951, the "Cuban Hawk" Kid Gavilan, born Gerardo Gonzalez in Berrocal, Camaguey, and named for his manager's café, came to Philadelphia to face the hometown hero Gil Turner, undefeated in 32 appearances, and drew a record gate for a welterweight title fight: $269, 667.  Though the bout was scored equally by most as the frames progressed, the Kid was victorious when, after a serious pummeling from the Cuban, Turner collapsed into the ropes in the 11th round, suffering the humility of a loss for the 1st time.
Philadelphia's Municipal Stadium was the site of a fine undercard of mostly middling matches, as the New Yorker Richie Anderson won over local Canonsburg welterweight Don Alderson after 6, and another brotherly citizen Charley Spicer beat Chicago's Clarence Harbin in 6 rounds of welterweight action.  In a fierce fight, the local welterweight contender with a killer conqueror's name, Cortez Jackson could not tame his fellow Philadelphian Henry Beltrante's aggressive ways and lost the decision in their mid-length match.  Hammering the local lightweight Basil Marie through every round, the small Philly slugger Jimmy Hackney knocked Marie down for the count in the 6th to secure his 8th straight without a loss since his debut, while in a short contest of light heavy Billies, Tampa, Florida, novice Reddish beat the rookie Christie by a TKO in the 2nd of 4 to score his 7th victory with merely 1 defeat, and Christie found other employ.
