Upon his refusal to be inducted into the US Army during the Vietnam War, Muhammad Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title by the WBA. Then the WBA wanted to find a replacement champion and so held an eight-man, seven-fight tournament to do so. This particular fight was part of it. The other pairs of contenders were Jimmy Ellis and Leotis Martin, Jerry Quarry and Floyd Patterson, and Thad Spencer and Ernie Terrell. This tournament was an “all-TV” event.
Here, the German Mildenberger was knocked down four times by the Argentine Bonavena, in Rounds 1, 4, 7 and 10. Bonavena won this contest by unanimous decision. Jimmy Ellis eventually won the title.
In other fights that day: - Conny Rudhof vs. Jose Luiz Penteado. The German Rudhof won by points against the Brazilian Penteado after eight rounds.
- Karl Heinz Brunnholz vs. Ruben Orrico. The German Heinz Brunnholz won against the Uruguayan Orrico by points after eight rounds.
- Gerhard Piaskowy vs. Renato Maria Romano. The German Piaskowy beat the Italian Romano by points after eight rounds.
- Jose Peyre vs. Peter Schulze. The Belgian Peyre knocked out the German Schulze in the first round of their scheduled eight rounds.
- Louis Croes vs. Friedrich Rudiger. In his first professional fight, the German Rudiger knocked out the Belgian Croes in the second round. It was only Croes’ second fight and he would end up not winning any fights in his short career.
