Scheduled event Grandstand
Boxing records do not show this 15-round bout as having taken place. John Henry Lewis was the first African American to win the world light heavyweight title, in April of 1938 (even though some did not recognize his win). He would defend the title through the summer, finally "winning" officially in October of 1938. He had no recorded contests in July. Likewise, "Two Ton" Tony Galento had several fights in 1938, but none in July. Apparently, this bout had been cancelled only four days before it was scheduled because Galento had caught pneumonia and had only a 50-50 chance of pulling through it.
