Jersey Joe Walcott was brought out to Los Angeles by promoter Frank Sinatra, “The Chairman of the Board,” to fight Cleveland’s Giuseppe Antonio Berardinelli, better known as Joe Maxim. The ticket bills Jersey Joe as “No. 1 Contender” and Maxim as “The White Knight of Cleveland”. This was the third fight for the two in a year. Whoever won would get a shot the world title held by “The Brown Bomber”, Joe Louis.
The first two encounters between Walcott and Maxim both ended after ten rounds. In Camden the previous August, Maxim had earned the first victory of the series by decision. Walcott responded in January in Philadelphia with a mixed decision.
Here in Gilmore Stadium near Hollywood, the stars watched as Jersey Joe claimed a split decision, again after 10 rounds. He would go on to fight and lose against Joe Louis in 1948.
