Marcotte, Fernand vs. Durelle, Joey (Yvon) III Gervais, Marc vs. Butler, Marshall II Sponagle, Barry vs. Collette, Paul II Borden, Joe vs. MacIntosh, Bert Maritime Light Heavyweight Championship
Since
falling to a technical knockout in the 11th of 15 in a bid for the
Commonwealth light middleweight crown in Sydney, Australia, in June the
previous summer, former Canadian welterweight titlist Donato Paduano had scored
7 straight wins in long bouts. An aging
but intelligent fighter, the former world welter and middleweight champion
Emile Griffith was no easy match though, and the U.S. Virgin Islander dominated the
bout with the Italian-born Quebecer Paduano, taking the unanimous decision at
the end of 10 hard fought frames.
Former Canadian welterweight champion
Yvon, or Joey, Durelle took on the future national middleweight titlist Fernand
Marcotte for a third time, having lost the 1st fight by a quick
knockout and the 2nd by a mixed decision, back to back in the fall
of 1972. Both fighters had lost multiple
times to Paduano when he was campaigning at welterweight and held that title
in 1969 and ’70, before Paduano lost it to Clyde Gray in early 1971, and
Marcotte had lost to Gray as well the previous December. Here
in the Forum outside Montreal, the two battled to a draw over 10 frames. While Durelle took the result as yet another
sign of fading skills, choosing but once more to fight professionally, a loss
the LeClair ending his long career, Marcotte next traveled to Miami Beach to
face Elisha Obed for the NABF 154-pound honors. |
