1999’s “Fighter of the Year” according to the WBHOF, Oxnard, California’s former Olympian (Atlanta 1996) Fernando Vargas defended his perfect record and the IBF light middleweight crown for the 5th time against the challenge of Ross Thompson of Buffalo in this headliner in Las Vegas in August. Thompson touched canvas repeatedly in the 3rd, then again early in the next round before the referee Joe Cortez called the TKO with nearly two minutes left in that 4th frame. In the senior of the two other championship matchups, another former Olympian (1992 Barcelona) Vernon Forrest took his perfect record home with additions after the referee stopped the action because of headbutt ruled accidental to his challenger for the vacant IBF welter belt, Guyanan Raul Frank, and called no contest to the whole affair after 3 of a slated dozen. The rematch, same stakes, same place, in May the next year, belonged to “The Viper” by unanimous decision. In his 2nd defense in the NABA light middleweight duel, Sonoran-born southpaw Jose Flores provided somewhat of a shock to the previously unbowed Ugandan “Doctor” Robert Kamya, with a TKO victory in the 7th of their 12 requisite rounds.
