In the final bout of the WBA Heavyweight Elimination Tournament, the Californian Quarry faced the powerful young Kentuckian in a 15-round main event.  Quarry struggled in more than half the rounds against Ali's sparring partner and Ellis claimed the mixed decision and the championship.  In a 10-round heavyweight contest, the Louisianan Clark marginally overcame the fading Philadelphian Martin, who had lost in the quarter-finals of the tournament to Ellis, with the referee claiming a draw.  Further down the slate, California heavyweight contender "Shotgun Sheldon" Shelton defeated the less experienced Grant by a TKO in the 3rd of their 6-round affair.
