The 1924 Paris Olympic gold medalist and former world flyweight champion Fidel LaBarba had retired from the ring to enter Stanford College in 1927, but was forced by the Depression to return.  Here LaBarba faced off for the 3rd time in a year with the Windy City's Earl Mastro, headlining for 10 rounds in Chicago Stadium, but neither dominated the decision and a draw was recorded, leaving the proof of the better between them to argument.  The undefeated middleweight from Wisconsin Littman Tait took 7 of his slated 10 to record the win, knocking out the local Dan Gasparo, while the "Bald Eagle" from Louisville Henry Firpo had his strength fail him in the 6th of 8 as the Norwegian Haakon Hansen hammered him to score the win.  In the middling match, the marvelous Barney Ross, future world champion in 3 weight classes and U.S. Marine Silver Star medal recipient from mortal combat on Guadalcanal (1942), made short work of the Cuban "Kid" Luis Perez, slamming him to the canvas in less than a round.  In the short bouts on the undercard that Thursday night, Georgie Nate, out of South Bend, Indiana, took revenge over Chicago's Willie Pellegrini, and the local featherweight Sammy Levine put the more experienced Al Rivers down for the count in 4th of his 2nd professional fight.
