World Featherweight Championship Davis, Teddy vs. Gonzales, Corky Boucher, Chick vs. Scholes, Billy Robnett, Gene vs. McGarrity, Charlie III Cannady, Dick vs. Johnson, Harold "Hal" (final) II Perez, Danny Jo vs. Anderson, Sammy Boxer
The 4th and final fight between the 2 champion featherweights was for the world title once again, this time with the Polo Grounds as venue, but the change from Yankee Stadium did little for the result. The "Will O'the Wisp" Willie Pep lost his challenge to regain the world crown when he failed to return to the ring again, this time for the 9th round, with the Boston-born Sandy Saddler retaining the title reclaimed in Pep's surrender in August of 1950. Saddler had also won their 1st engagement as he defended the world crown, while in their 2nd, the Fight of the Year for 1949 according to The Ring Magazine, Pep had taken the championship. This 4th ended their rivalry at 3 to 1 in Sandy's favor. The future featherweight contender from Brooklyn Teddy Davis fought Denver's Corky Gonzales for 8 full rounds before earning the decision, while in a pair of middling matches of lightweights, Manchester, Connecticut's Chick Boucher stopped Tampa, Florida's Billy Scholes before the close of the 2nd frame, while the Frenchman Gene Robnett claimed his 21st victory in 22 tries with his triumph over the American from Charlie McGarrity by decision for the 3rd time. In a rematch of New Jersey's fine young welterweights, Newark's Nick Cannady won in 4 rounds with Paterson's Hal Johnson, and taking to the big stage in only his 2nd bout, New Yorker Danny Jo Perez won to remain perfect as the more accomplished lightweight from Pittsburg, Sammy Anderson, suffered his 2nd loss in 10 pro events. Struggling in the shadow of his more famous contemporary, the light heavyweight champion of the same name, the journeyman Johnson found 3 straight losses sufficient reason to hang up the gloves. |
