Born in Lumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sumbu Kalambay fought out of Ancona in Marche as an Italian citizen and earned both the national middleweight title in 1985 and that for the continent in ’87. His defeat of Iran Barkley in Tuscany gave him the WBA world crown, and in Ravenna he defended against the American champ Robbie Sims, with the challenger taking it the distance before Kalambay was judged the winner. |
