World (NYSAC) Lightweight Championship 1944 Fight of the Year - The Ring Magazine Lello, Pete vs. Guido, Al Fitzpatrick, Fitzie vs. Kendrick, Bill Leamus, Jackie vs. Manfro, Joey Smith, Bobby vs. Wilmer, Archie II Samuels, Hubert vs. Cooper, Georgie Jacobs, Mike (promoter) Working Press
Facing off for the title for the 3rd time in less than 9 months, "Bobcat" Montgomery once again triumphed over the accomplished shoeshine from Augusta Beau Jack, this time by a split decision after 15 rounds to reclaim the world lightweight crown. Once again, the fierce competition between the two rivals was unparallelled in the ring that year, according to the staff at The Ring Magazine, granting it "Fight of the Year" honors for 1944. The undercard at the Garden that Friday night presented a trio 6-round contests and a pair of shorter fights. The six rounds were all required for the powerfull Gary, Indiana, contender Pete Lello to hammer out a win over the usually capable Al Guido, while the West Virginian native Fitzpatrick cleaned up his mess with novice Harlem light heavyweight Kendrick by knocking him out completely in 3, and Leamus, also down from Uptown, went the full set of frames to take the win over the Bronx lightweight Manfro. Smith, based in Philadelphia, managed Wilmington's Archie Wilmer well enough again in their 4 frames, but neither Samuels nor Cooper seemed intent on a solution in their short bout, both coming away without a win or a loss for their time in the squared circle. |
