A Baltimore boxer who had fought under several names, his given one, Clarence Burns, and both Kayo & “K.O.” Burns as well as that of Clarence “Red” Burman under which his professional records as currently assembled now rest with BoxRec.com., the heavyweight was taken under the wing of former world champion Jack Dempsey in New York City, opening up many opportunities for excellent matchups as his career progressed. Here in early 1939 at the Garden, Mike Jacobs had him headlining against a British battler, Tommy Farr, called the "Tonypandy Terror" in his Welsh home. Farr suffered humiliations against Louis, Baer, Braddock and Nova in America, and continued his streak, losing to Burman by decision in a 10-round bout. The 2 met again 3 months later in Harringay Arena in England, with Farr winning on points after a dozen more rounds of action to even the score.
On this stoutly stocked Garden undercard, out-of-towners filled the longer bouts, the heavyweight Buddy Knox making his New York debut after nearly 5 years of fighting successfully in Illinois, Michigan and his home state of Ohio, taking the win over the Los Angeles based journeyman Chuck Crowell after 10. Originally born in the tiny town of Naftel, Alabama, Detroit’s Roscoe Toles was the victor over Gus Dorazio, up from Philly, by a TKO in the 7th of 8. The best of 4 short fights had the young unbeaten heavyweight Comiskey collecting his 8th win in a perfect career by knocking out the novice Marty Lieberman in the 3rd. The others were won by Philly's big man Nick Fiorentino over Al Ryll, the Bronx's Jerry Grieff with a TKO of Julio Ortenzio in the 2nd of 4, and the Frenchman Francis Jacques, who took his 7th without a loss, crushing Cliff Kusterbeck to the canvas in the 1st. |
