Donny LaLonde, the Canadian "Golden Boy," lost his title and the vacant super middleweight title to the unbelievable veteran Sugar Ray Leonard when the fight was stopped late in the 9th round. Leonard collected his first super middleweight title, to complement those belts for the welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight levels he had held at one time during his career. The future hall-of-famer posted the world light heavyweight crown to top them all when the agreed upon 12-rounds allowed the WBC sanctioned championship held by LaLonde to be contested as well, though both boxers weighed in below 168. In the light welterweight championship at stake that night, Roger Mayweather took the unanimous decision over Vinny Pazienza after a full 12 rounds, and in the super flyweight contest, the man from Mexicali, Roman required as long to earn his concensus as the winner over the Columbian Sugar Baby Rojas. Further down the boxing card for the evening, the Canadian future middleweight contender Sherry made his debut, winning his short bout over the novice Deutscher by a TKO in the 3rd. |
