Scheduled World (WBA) Heavyweight Championship
This fine matchup between the WBA heavyweight champion "of the world" Jimmy Ellis and London's Henry Cooper, the holder of the European, British & Commonwealth crowns, was negotiated and announced in August of 1969 with plans for satellite telecast to the States for ABC's Wide World of Sports, according to newspaper reports of the time. Records show this bout between "Sir 'Enery" and Ali's sparring partner and fellow Kentuckian Ellis did not occur, though, with some sources noting the refusal of the British Boxing Board to recognize the world title status of the contest as the reason the show did not go on. |
